One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.
Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”
“Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the Lord has given them into our hands.”
Jonathon was an excited youth wanting to step out onto God’s great strength. Not scared or looking for proof, just full of a hopeful plan.
Jonathon also had a partner ‘in crime’ – a Stand By Me friend – someone who would encourage and be willing to back him up in the thick and thin.
With a dream and each other, they were ready.
“Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf.”
With knowledge and the Truth, they were pumped.
Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”
These two were willing to take a chance on the Creator they knew.
Jonathon had no idea if the Lord would act on their behalf or not…Not really.
But that didn’t stop him from taking that next step because:
Jonathon wasn’t basing his allegiance on what God’s action would be,
Jonathon was basing his faith on the God he knew.
He knew Him.
He knew the God who makes impossibles possible.
He knew the God who leads and protects and never ditches.
He knew there was nothing to lose and everything to gain if they would simply:
1. Step out.
3. Watch, listen, obey.
I can almost hear their hopeful, excited, got-life-by-the-tail whispers,
“Just think! Perhaps God will act on our behalf!… Wouldn’t that be awesome! He’ll lead us as we wait for Him, He’ll guide us as we watch for him, and he’ll keep us safe as we listen to Him. Let’s go for it!”
Lord, whether by many or by few, nothing can keep you from saving those you love. Nothing will keep you from helping us with the next step along our journey. You never ditch us.
You never lead us will your grace won’t carry us.
And you never send us out alone.
Thanks Lord. I needed to hear that today.
